How to read tea leaves. Info on reading from a cup.

Updated on June 29, 2012

Telling the future from your tea.

Tea leaf reading is a form of divination called tasseography. It dates back hundreds of years and has been a form of fortune telling for monarchs, celebrities and us mere mortals alike.

Tasseography has fallen steeply out of fashion since we have started to use the more convenient method of making tea via a tea bag. As you can only read tea leaves by using loose tea leaves.

Loose tea leaves can still be found at supermarkets, health food stores and some open markets, you just have to know where to look. It may also be a good idea to ask someone as they may not be placed in the destination that you would expect.

Anyone can learn the art of tasseography, it's just a matter of making out shapes, figures and signs from the dregs of the leaves left at the bottom of your tea cup.

What do I have to do?

Make a cup of tea using loose tea leaves, these can be fresh or dried, depending on what you like or what you can find. Make your cup of tea and drink it in the usual way. When you have finished and there is little or no water left and only the remains of the tea leave dregs you are ready to start.

Swirl what remains of the dregs in the bottom of the cup, in a clockwise direction three times, then leave for about a minute to settle. The residue of the tea will now have separated in some places and grouped in others. Reading the tealeaves are a bit like looking at clouds, what you read from them are not greatly detailed but should be recognisable.
