The Joy of a great Christmas toy.

Updated on December 1, 2009

Bringing a smile.

There are always the very special presents that you remember receiving at Christmas, weather it was from your childhood or in your adult years, that leave a lasting impression and a happy memory. The feeling of anticipation and excitement that comes with the opening of presents, unwrapping the paper to find a really great gift, is something we all want to achieve and pass on to others at Christmas.

However as trends come and go, the latest must haves change dramatically every year it's hard to keep up with trends and peoples interests. So just what can you buy for your loved ones that will not fall out of fashion too quickly or leave them and you feeling more then a little disappointed with your purchase?

The ever reliable bicycle.

One of the best Christmas presents I ever got was a bicycle, it was a chrome, Raleigh stunt bike and I loved it. I would ride it nearly everyday, all year round, I remember vividly that it gave me an incredible sense of freedom and I was very proud of it.

A bike makes a great Christmas present because it is not age or gender exclusive, they are of a substantial size (kids love big presents), it will last a good few years if you take care of it and encourages the child to exercise. If it's one great present your looking for, you can't go far wrong with a bicycle.

Roller skates and Roller blades.

Roller skates were invented before the Roller blades, I had a pair or roller skates at the age of six, I used to love watching ice skating on television and wearing my pink and white Roller skates were the next best thing. My parents were a little reluctant about the roller skates at first and felt it was a little dangerous, however with supervision, the right safety gear and some practice there apprehension soon evaporated.

Then when I was thirteen and the Roller blade came along, remembering how much I loved my roller skates when I was younger, I was very pleased to receive a pair of roller blades that year.

Roller blades and roller skates are as popular now as they were then and are even favoured by adults now as much as children.

The scooter.

The scooter is a great alternative or accompaniment to the bicycle. Cheaper and smaller but just as fun.  Most scooters fold away, which makes them incredibly easy to store. They all so usually have an extend able handle which extends to meet your child's need as they grow and last longer as a result.

The scooter covers a wide range of ages and can be for a girl or a boy.

A family board game.

Board games are a great way of getting the family together, especially during dark evenings and cold nights. A board game can involve all members of the family and is something they can play with on those rainy day's later on in the year.

20Q

20Q is the gift you can get when you really don't know what to get, it is a great little gadget that the receiver of the gift can enjoy time and time again. Trying to outwit the toy or just by being amazed at how it reads their mind.

Lego.

Lego has been a popular toy amongst children for many years and with sales as healthy as ever it appears it won't be falling out of favour any time soon. It's something that adults don't mind having a go at either and can be a successful and enjoyable shared activity. It can be played with all year round and bought again as a present, on following years. The bigger the collection of Lego the more creative a child can be.

Novelty toys.

Novelty toys can be so much fun and a pleasant surprise. From the sublime to the ridiculous, novelty gifts are unique, unusual and in some cases questionable.

Novelty gifts do not have to be rude or risky however there may well be someone you know that will appreciate that sort of thing. Ideal for adults or children depending on the gift, a novelty gift is a great idea for something a little bit different.
