Weirdest phobias.

Updated on February 25, 2013

What is a phobia?

A phobia or a phobic neurotic disorder, is characterized by the irrational fear of an object, animal, activity or situation. A person can suffer from one or many phobias and they can be expressed in many different ways at many different levels. The sufferer of a phobia feels sensations of dread, panic, sweating, shaking and a sense of unease when having to confront the issue they fear.

A phobia is usually the consequence of an event or an idea that stems from their childhood. Sometimes a phobia can be passed on from parent to child, as it grows up believing that the fears of their elders are justified and to be something that they should be scared of.

Phobias are treated by psycho therapeutic practises, counselling or hypnotherapy. The aim is to identify the initial cause of the phobia and to reprogramme the mind and install a logical awareness of the situation or object.

Phobias can be affected by any one of the five senses, a combination of a few or at worst all of them. Sometimes it's the way something appears, sometimes it's the way it sounds. It can be it's texture or feel. It can be it's scent or taste and sometimes its just an idea or concept, that is the reason behind the phobia.

Phobias can also be the consequence of association, or habit. They can arise immediately or happen gradually. Thank-fully the cures for phobias are affective and the success rates are high.

Below I have added a list of the weirdest phobias I know and a quiz to test you on some of the most common, I hope you find it interesting, useful and entertaining.
